課程概述

This course is an introduction to the field of health economics. It covers economics and its application to health and health care markets. The discussion starts with introducing economic as well as statistical tools in analyzing issues in health and health care market. The demand for health and medical care services, the behavior of medical care providers (hospitals and physicians), and the functioning of insurance markets are discussed. Government intervention, public policy, and policy’s influences in health care market are finally explored. Critical discussions of the health economics literature will take place during each class meeting. 

課程目標
By the end of the class, students should be able to
1. Apply economic logics and theories on issues in health and health care market.
2. Describe the issues in health and health care market in the language used by economists.
3. Use economic logics to identify the potential intended and unintended consequences from health and health care policy.

Class participation 
10% 
Students are expected to participate in the class and discussion. This will benefit your understanding of class materials.  
2. 
Final 
30% 
A final exam will be held on January 7. The final is a closed book exam. It consists three parts: multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and essays.  
3. 
Discussion leading 
30% 
Students will take turns leading discussions on the assigned articles. There will be two discussion leaders assigned for each paper. The discussion leader should briefly summarize the article with powerpoint slides, and prepare the questions for discussion.  
4. 
Midterm 
30% 
A midterm exam will be held on October 29. The midterm is a closed book exam. The exam consists three parts: multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and essays.
